The Foundation
In memory of the Catalan mathematician Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer (1912-1967), his cousins Maria and Maria dels Àngels Carbona i Balaguer created the Foundation Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer in 1983. This Foundation was integrated into the Institut d’Estudis Catalans in 1991.
Purpose
The purpose of the Foundation is to stimulate mathematical research, granting a prize and grants for studies or research in the area of the mathematical sciences.

The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize is awarded annually to a mathematical monograph of an expository nature, written in English, which presents the latest developments in an active area of research in Mathematics, in which advances have been produced recently. It amounts to 15.000 euros and the winning monograph is published by Birkhäuser in the series “Progress in Mathematics”.
The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Grants are offered annually to advanced PhD students of the universities of the Catalan-speaking countries to visit a research centre for 1 to 3 months.
